It’s clear that poaching, trafficking and sales of animal parts has grown dramatically in recent years, and is now a global crisis. Rhinos, elephants  and tigers are under threat of extinction driven by trophy hunting and demand for animal products. These items are seen as prestigious, high  status gifts. Until this changes, the demand will continue to increase. A strong and coherent response to this situation is urgently needed. Many groups are working tirelessly in this area, raising awareness,  supporting rangers and wildlife sanctuaries, campaigning for funds and targeting users. We are pleased to hear of a Wildlife Trade Crisis Summit  meeting at the Lancaster House on Thursday with members of the Zoological Society of London. This brings together international leaders, who  will discuss a global response to animal poaching. Prince Charles and Prince William have jointly released a video campaign urging people to “unite for wildlife”.

The meeting will also look at how conservationists can better protect animals. Wildlife sanctuaries and wild places are challenging to secure, and the rangers face highly organised and well-equipped poachers. Wild populations are in crisis, and, unless we make rapid progress, we may lose them altogether EATT Magazine believes strongly that action must be taken to safeguard wild animals, wild places, and the people who risk their lives to look after them. We also see the vital importance of targeting people who use products like rhino horn, as it is their demand to buy that keeps poachers working and populations decreasing. Our current edition features an article by Lynn Johnson, founder of Breaking The Brand. She and her team of volunteers are working towards stopping the demand for rhino horn products, namely Viet Nam’s wealthy businessmen and affluent mothers of young children.

They are aiming to raise $20,000 by March 23rd. All funds will be used to place ads in high profile locations (airport lounges, in-flight magazines, shopping centres etc) around Viet Nam. We are proud to be able to support them and encourage you to do the same – every dollar they raise will make a difference.
